Jefferson's Fabricated Quote

I wonder if Democrats or Republicans regularly repeat the fraudulent "quote":

It's truer to say that these days patriotism is the highest form of dissent -- against a culture where the media award each other Pulitzers for damaging national security, and the only way a soldier's mom can become a household name is if she's a Bush-is-the-real-terrorist kook like Cindy Sheehan, and our grade schools' claims to teach our children about America, "warts and all," has dwindled down into teaching them all the warts and nothing else. Or as the Capital Times of Madison, Wis., concluded its ringing editorial on the subject:

"Thomas Jefferson got it right: 'Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.' And teaching children how to be thoughtful and effective dissenters is the highest form of education."

Teaching them authentic Jefferson quotes would be a better approach.

democrats and National Defense

Arnold Ahlert:

This affection for McCarthy may be influenced by the fact that the secrets she revealed are seen as damaging to the Bush administration. But if the Democrats' "litmus test" for heroism - as opposed to treason - is the revealing of top-secret information for political gain, they have proven once again their lust for power is more important than protecting the country.

General treachery

Victor Davis Hanson summarizes :

Back in America, pensioned generals and out-of-work diplomats who oversaw the failed old realpolitik of the past keep telling us that Iraq is a disaster. They are too quick to declare defeat.

Eco-extremism and population control"

Mark Steyn contrasts the alarmists and the current state of population decline in the West. Seems the left can't be satisfied unless people die horribly:

Meanwhile, Blackmore won't have to worry about whether to cull Jacques Chirac in order to save Sting. Given the plummeting birthrates in Europe, Russia, Japan, etc., a large chunk of the world has evidently decided to take preemptive action on climate change and opt for self-extinction. Pace the New Yorker, much of the planet will be uninhabited long before it's uninhabitable. The Belgian climate specialist will be on the endangered species list with the spotted owl. Blue-state eco-bores will be finding the international sustainable-development conferences a lot lonelier.

Our "betters" speak

Quin Hilyer explains the left wing's hatred and "anger":

Anyone who takes even the most occasional peek at leftist blogs knows that this is par for the course. It's not enough to be frustrated or angry or to disagree with those of us on the Right, and certainly not enough to try to use reasoned arguments to persuade or enlighten. Instead, all that seems to matter is the intensity of the rant and the inventiveness of the calumny that can be heaped on conservatives. Aside from the puerility -- indeed, the perpetual adolescence -- of the Left's fascination with vulgarities, what's also lost is any sense that reasoned discourse is of any value whatsoever, along with any sense of responsibility for maintaining a civil society.

Illegals vote

Lileks :

Democratic leaders have a different perspective. They look at the throngs marching in the streets the last few weeks, demanding their host country repay their ingratitude with citizenship, free schools, medical care, housing and an abject apology for the time Ponce de Leon spit on the ground without wiping it up, and the Democrats see votes. Millions of them! No one who shows up waving the flag of another nation and complaining about something that happened in 1492 is likely to vote Republican, after all.

The French and cowardice

Captain Ed:

Even worse is the reaction of the French to these atrocities. Halimi was kept in a basement for three weeks, tortured with acid and cigarettes. Neighbors -- at least thirty of them -- heard his screams and knew what was going on, and not one of them lifted a finger to notify police or to help Halimi escape.
